A night of...
• AURALISM (11:15pm - 2:00am)
...with:
-Jason Short
[auralism, blipswitch, karloff]
BIO:
Jason Short is young, tirelessly enthusiastic, and stands as one of San Francisco's emerging techno DJ/producers in a scene gaining international recognition for new sounds and fresh directions. He didn't arrive here by accident though; it is literally a decade's worth of hard work in the making. The resourceful Short is the co-founder of the popular San Francisco label Auralism as well as one half the production duos Coalition of the Killing (COTK), Eutactic, and Kyaro. Through these outlets, he has released an array of tracks and remixes on notably diverse labels- from Chris Fortier's Fade to Falko Brocksieper and M.I.A.'s Karloff Recordings. From his Fog City HQ in SF, he has planned road campaigns this year that include return trips to South American and Europe. Short also speaks of a 2009 as a time where he is looking "...to shock everyone with my new music". Tired of the growing malaise in the dance music community, Short is eager to dust up the status quo this year with some memorable techno cuts. Tracks focused on strong melodies with the same intense psychedelic personality he's become recognized for internationally. But Short also yearns, like any true artist, to showcase his wide range of musical emotions with a full length album that exposes his love of IDM, ambient, dub, and cinematic soundscapes. He promises to unveil that material on a much-anticipated Jason Short full-length due later this year. He hopes to catch a lot of the chin-stroking technorati off guard. You can submit your comments to him in person at one of his many upcoming DJ or live PA gigs somewhere in the world. Or better yet, Short suggests, make the pilgrimage to San Francisco and catch either the monthly party Lil' Brother or one of the Aural Therapy one-offs. It is here that he and Auralism have built a strong foundation by playing host to other like-minded characters such as Dave Aju, Mikael Stavostrand, Elon, Alland Byallo, Touane among countless others.
-Hac Le
[auralism, listed, play co. & friends]
BIO:
Ever since he took control of his Catholic High School's dance committee and started spinning the new wave and early electronic music he loved, Hac Le has been exhorting audiences to dance, and audiences have listened. listed resident & Auralism's multi-talented Creative Director is a man of many hats, from world-traveling DJ, to promoter, to up-and-coming producer.
The Vietnam-born Hac spent the '90s kicking around LA, absorbing the spacey, mind-warping West Coast sound and putting in a three-year residency at Melrose's Kontrol Faktory party. After relocating to Chicago, giving up on and subsequently rediscovering DJing, he began producing his own dark, tech-y tracks under the name Kyaro with new ally and future Auralism founder Jason Short. (Hac currently has several solo and collaborative projects in the works.)
In 2000, Hac co-founded Global Trip, a Mexico-based company that has imported everyone from Lee Burridge to Deep Dish to Dimitri from Paris; he also forms the heart of Play Co. & Friends, a cadre of producers, artists, and DJs who promote Chicago's underground scene through parties, radio shows, and podcasts. Still, the turntables remain Hac's true passion, reinforced when John Digweed chose Hac's mix as the winner of FutureMusic's Next Big Thing DJ contest and James Zabiela in the recent DJ Mag poll named him "Breakthru DJ of 2008". Hac's sets, which will carry him around the globe in the coming year, are where his longstanding infatuation with dance music comes alive. "On one hand, I have the Chicago house influence, on the other, the nearby Detroit techno, and my West Coast background. It all comes together in a very nice fusion which people enjoy and seem to have a hard time categorizing!"
-Roman Stange
[auralism, blipswitch, mothership]
BIO:
Roman Stange is the dark horse of the Auralism stable in more ways than one. Experiencing Techno’s birth in late 80’s Detroit, as a teenager, Stange has Soul and Techno music in his blood. In the early 90’s Stange emerged on the other side of the Techno underground with a penchant for immersive soulful sound scapes ringing to a 4/4 beat. After relocating to Boston, Roman quickly began pushing the shaded experimental underbelly of electronic music—minimal, IDM, and industrial—against the city's prevailing indie rock scene, performing leftfield live PAs with the renowned Toneburst & Lollygagger collectives, which also included Keith Whitman Fullerton (Hrvatski), DJ C (EOSS), Mr. In Ter Rupt , Soplerfo, DJ/Rupture (Jace Clayton), and DJ ESP.
Based in San Francisco since 2006, Stange has taken up the West Coast's vibrant dance-floor culture as his personal call to arms, hearkening back to his Detroit roots to create immersive, psychedelic groovers blooming with mechanized soul. 2008 will see several Roman Stange cuts out on Auralism—his first record releases ever in his 15 eccentric years as producer and live performer. A self-described creator of "illgazer/poly-environment sounds," Roman Stange has now compiled hundreds of hours of live shows and a tremendous amount of studio material. "Poly-environment is not a genre," he states. "It's a term I use to describe how I place psycho-electronic sounds based on the emotions I'm feeling at the time. I like to take people to the limit with sounds. My tracks take you to these frequencies where it feels like it's gonna hurt, but it never gets to that point; it just takes you to that peak. Aural S&M, and it's gotta be played loud!"
"The dystopic musical vision of one Roman Stange. His music – a primordially dark, slightly off-kilter take on abstract techno, replete with eerily distant voices and concréte-ish textures – would seem to hint at a teutonic pedigree of some sort. Though raised just north of Detroit (the birthplace of American techno), Stange cut his musical teeth in and around Boston and had become a staple of the city’s computer music underground as a member of both the Lollygagger and Toneburst collectives. Always compelling, but never comforting."
