We all have been waiting a long time for this, legendary underground house and techno producer... Francois K. Only Frankie Knuckles can lay claim to straddling a longer span of time in the thick of dance music than Francois K. As a producer he has collaborated with the likes of U2, Kraftwerk, Depeche Mode, and The Cure, whilst few did more to mechanize and refine the disco template info music clearly recognized as house music in the 80's. As a DJ Kevorkian learnt his art from the likes of Walter Gibbons and Larry Levan, spinning in New York's most legendary venues such as Paradise Garage, The Loft, Studio 54 and Club Zanzibar. Today he continues to be an ever present at the worlds leading underground clubs including Cielo in New York where he holds his Deep Space residency, As well as regular appearances at Fabric, Womb, and Angels of Love. Add to that his revered Body & Soul sessions alongside Joe Claussel and Danny Krivit and its clear that his popularity remains as strong as ever and his sets as eclectic as they come.

Francois just recently released his 3 CD Mix compilation on Ministry of Sound, Masterpiece, that has been getting raving reviews. Just last year his 3 CD compilation on Balance received incredible reviews, from underground tech house to techno and even minimal, Francois does it all. This is a very special show as Francois rarely makes his way to the west coast. Last time he was here was 3 years ago, so make sure you catch him up close and personal in the intimate setting of Vessel on their incredible Function1 sound system.

About François K.

François K. was born and raised in France, moving to New York in 1975 to pursue a career as a drummer. He played in various R&B cover bands and was hired by the Galaxy 21 disco to drum along with the DJ's records. This led to a strong interest in the nascent disco sound. François started DJing around New York, playing clubs such as Experiment 4 (along with John "Jellybean" Benitez), JJ Knickerbocker, the Flamingo, and New York New York.

Around the same time, François discovered studio editing and mixing. He created a series of disco medleys and re-edits (many of which are still available as bootlegs), and in 1978 landed an A&R job at Prelude Records, a small but rapidly expanding independent disco label. One of his first accomplishments at Prelude was remixing Musique's "Push Push In The Bush," a massive disco hit which sold nearly a million copies. He went on to remix and/or edit the majority of Prelude releases, including such club classics as D Train's "Keep On", "Body Music" by The Strikers as well as signing seminal tracks which helped define the dance music aesthetic, like "Double Journey" by Powerline or "Disco Circus" by Martin Circus.

Meanwhile, François continued his DJ work, spinning at legendary clubs such as Studio 54, Les Mouches, Better Days, Buttermilk Bottom, The Loft, AM/PM, Bond's, Zanzibar, and The Paradise Garage, filling in for resident Garage jock Larry Levan. He also started collaborating with Levan (a major remixer in his own right) on studio work, and soon became so busy behind the console that he decided to stop DJing in 1983.

By the mid-eighties, François had become an in-demand top remixer and producer on both sides of the Atlantic. He quit Prelude in 1982 and started Axis Productions, working with many new wave acts such as Yazoo and Wide Boy Awake, as well as U2, Thomas Dolby, The Cure, Eurythmics, Ashford and Simpson, Mick Jagger, Diana Ross, Dinosaur L, and many others. He has as well mixed albums and singles for Kraftwerk, Depeche Mode, Rebecca (Japan) and Erasure. In 1987, he opened Axis Studios, which quickly became a major recording and mixing facility. Notable Axis clients include Madonna, Todd Terry, C&C Music Factory, Mariah Carey, Teddy Riley, Mary J. Blige, Deee-Lite, and many others.

François has since returned to DJ'ing , playing various guest spots in New York City at The Sound Factory Bar, House Nation, Afterlife, Roxy, Vinyl and Twilo. He has also played in the U.K. at Ministry of Sound, The End, Bar Rhumba, Back To Basics, The Blue Note and Hard Times, in Italy at Angels Of Love, Cocorico and Red Zone, and in Japan at Club Yellow, Gold, Precious Hall, Red Hot, and various clubs.

In 1996, François started the now legendary Sunday afternoon at Body & Soul, which went on for six years and three events at Central Park’s Summerstage. François, along with DJ's Joaquin 'Joe' Claussell and Danny Krivit, spun a soulful mix of everything from jazzy house to drum n'bass. Body&Soul, which is still holding events from time to time (in Tokyo yearly) has established a faithful eclectic following and has allowed him to experiment and develop his own musical vision.
He has recently started a new NYC weekly club residency called Deep Space, where every Monday night he plays Dub in all of its musical forms, from Jamaican vintage grooves to spacey and abstract new electronic sounds with anything in between.

In 1994, François established Wave Music a fully independent record label. Wave Music was created out of a need for a label with initiative to turn out lasting music with substance as well as style. It is with this mentality that Wave has established extraordinary national and international success with it's eclectic catalog of soulful music. From the jazzy vibe of Abstract Truth's "Get Another Plan", to the explosive #1 Billboard Dance Chart hit "Din Da Da" by club sensation Kevin Aviance, Wave places no boundaries on expression. Along with a steady flow of new releases, he has managed to find time to record some of his own music, such as the acclaimed FK-EP , followed by "Time & Space", as well as "Capricorn", "Enlightenment and his newest release being "Awakening", a stunning Brazilian-flavored jazzy song featuring vocals by Barbara Mendes (with whom François previously collaborated) with more to come out in 2002.

As if this wasn't enough, he is still very much in demand as remixer today, working recently on material for the likes of Cesaria Evora, Moloko, Ame Strong, Talvin Singh, Underworld, Juan Atkins, Rinocerose, B 52's, Bent, Gloria Estefan, Big Muff and others.

Vessel blows, but the sound is great.

sound sucked last time i was there. its sweet you have a funktion one system but it dont mean shit if itsnt set up correctly. sorry for hatin i just cant stand that place. actually the place itself as an underground techno lair is awesome. i guess it's the crowd that i cant deal with.

the crowd will be different at this party

Oh no, don't tell me the sound at Vessel is starting to suck, too. Noooooo!!! I needs me some good sound in this town. Anyway, I hope it's better for this event.

Wow, that is some setup. Doesn't Hawtin run something similar? That should definitely be interesting to see & hear. DJs like FK are such a dying breed...he's been around so long and has such an understanding of underground dance music, that he really knows how to take people on journeys regardless of genre.

There should definitely be some heads in the house since it's on a Thursday, and I'm willing to bet that the crowd will more than likely be more diverse than what us techno snobs usually see.

Although I'm not a Vessel fan, as long as I've got a space by the speaker and a view near the booth, I'm all good.

love Vessel or hate it, you'd be a fool to miss this guy.

anyone hear his set from Minitek? not saying he's technically flawless, but Francois is definitely an amazing entertainer.

the man is a legend for a reason.

i will be there, with my eyes closed and ears wide open.

Saw him play an underground this past new years eve in NYC. Fantastic performance. An amazing entertainer for sure, plays super versatile sets that covers all sorts of genres -- you basically just end up ignoring the technical aspects.

yeah that looks like traktor pro running through ableton on a seperate computer. he's definitely an FX happy dj. amazing performer, no doubt. when i just started working at WAX long ago he was booked at the WAX party at martini lounge in LA. he played 8 hours of all kinds of genre's. 2 hours of dub, 2 hours of deep soulful house, 2 hours of techno, 2 hours of disco... amazing.

don't miss this show. i havent heard the guy in what... 7 years now... but i'm sure he's still one of the frickin best there is!

actually looking at the pdf it looks like 2 laptops running traktor with 2 decks each. the 4 decks screens are probably too cramped for him ... as they are for me with traktor pro. you can't really see the playlists

Bird's the word! Go check out FK!

Who gives a rat's patootie if the DJ has airtight mixes all night or not? That's totally irrelevant when the music is tight and the programming is spot on. I've been getting pretty tired of hearing perfectly mixed mediocre drivel for quite some time now. The flaws reveal the moment.

Now, there are some examples where the DJ cannot mix his/her way out of a paper bag. They shall be nameless, but we have all heard it...dreadful. That's really just a lack of skills, and has no business being heard in public. FK is not one of these cases. I did, however, hear him accidentally hit the pause button on Radio Slave's CD player in the middle of his set while he was setting up the FK rig. Whoops!

i seen this guy at body and soul in NYc 1999, at a free summer concert series that they have on saturdays in Central Park. Still stands as one of the all times, it was wild. with those other guys and also this Cuban dance troupe that performed before them and mixed into their performance and it was some shit and the world was on ecstacy that day. I saw that show at mighty awhile back too and i wasn't feelin' it so much. Hard tellin' if I will make this one.
i feel old.

My. Favorite. DJ. Ever.

Mixed. Started off kind of rocky, IMHO, although he played some good stuff. Lots of "rave-y" sounding stuff in the earlier part of the set. It got a lot better as it went on. He managed to mix in Led Zeppelin's "Whole Lotta Love" and it worked really well. Some great acid later, including Hardfloor. Definitely not his best set or anything, though. I'd really like to see him on his home turf.

after hearing his set at Minitek, i found this one very disappointing.

started off great (first few songs) then just tanked into cheesy club music and bad electro house.

he seemed grumpy.

too bad.

I think he played a half way fuck you set. At least I hope he was doing that, he looked out into the crowd and saw douches everywhere except in the back where we were cold chillin.
I generally liked his thing but it was also sort of generic.
I hate to say it, but vessel is back on my shit list.
1. friend got groped
2. stolen clothing of another friend
3. sound too loud with earplugs
4. drinks too expensive, glad I flasked it
5. too much colonge
6. too many shiny clothing pieces
7. champagne buckets are not port-o-poddies, I just thought you know they are there by the dance floor for dancing ease. The lights underneath look extra cool with different colored liquids or solids in them.

screw the pretension...i swear
