Don't perform. Use reason 4, Logic and Cubase.
My head spins, but through the blur I see something. I see the beat. Visual interpretation of sound.
Performance
When djing: Vinyl, Cds, though I'm getting into using Traktor with vinyl control now, which i LOVE! Sometimes I bring my Machinedrum with and play beats live as well.
When live:
Mac powerbook running Ableton Live. a MOTU traveller for a sound card, a Novation Remote25 SL, and a Doepfer Pocketdial for midi control. An Elektron Machinedrum is synced to the clock of the computer via Elektron's propeitary usb midi interface (Turbomidi). Audio is being run to a Mackie VLZ3, 12 channel mixer. We have the Kick and Bass from Ableton and the Machinedrum running out on seperate mono channels to the mixer, as well as the other percussion and synths to their own stereo channels on the mixer. We also use the AUX sends on the MACKIE to send out to a Frostwave "Sonic Alienator" distortion/filter fx unit. We have some other analog fx we use sometimes, but its hard to bring everything out.
Production
I write music very much the same way that i perform it, so just add to the above setup:
Synths:
Waldorf Pulse, Emu Planet Earth, Korg MS2000, Juno 106, Elektron Machinedrum, Joe Mox XBase09
FX: Frostwave Sonic Alienator, Damage Control Demonizer Tube Distortion Pedal, ERNC Stereo Compressor (finally!), also borrowing a Frostwave MS20 filter, and a ElectroHarmonix Memoryman analog delay pedal from Roman Stange. I also have a Elektrix voice processor.
I also have a Focusrite Liquid Mix that i use for mixing down, and Dynaudio BM5A studio montiors.
damn...i've never listed this before..let me know if you have any questions!
lenovo laptop + ableton live + free vsts.

Perform with: Roland SP-555, SH-201, SH-32, and Korg EA-1
Compose with: Roland SH-201, SH-32, and Apple Logic Pro 7
I used to use a laptop for live performances....but the sampler just works super and it kinda forces me to be a bit more creative/performance ready for live shows. Looking at an MPC (500 or 1000) for some extra sampling power.
I don't mind making sample clips of my music, its kinda fun.

LIVE:
we have ableton live on 2 macbook pros running through their own MOTU traveler sound cards. i also have a machinedrum hooked up to my sound card by way of a hardware compressor. danny has a tabletop evolver running into his sound card. one of us sends our audio to the other via fiber optics cable, and our whole setup is mixed down to one stereo output that runs into the venue's mixer. we sync the computers and hardware through my elektron turboMIDI interface. one of us sends the master clock from their computer to everything else, the other puts their live session in EXT mode. we both also have evolution uc33e MIDI controllers.

I always wondered how you did all that....
sounds stressful for you, but lovely for us!
