Howdy folks. I am looking for some suggestions on what type of Mic to get for doing field recordings and samples. Mainly looking for something that I can plug into my audio interface to record sounds that can be manipulated into beats/textures etc... I have a shure sm58 mic but a friend recommended i get something that is better suited to environmental sound rather than vocals. any suggestions would be really appreciated. Under 100 bucks would be nice too but i know you get what you pay for and i want high quality sound. Thanks for any advice.

i wouldn't necessarily use an SM58 for studio recordings either. You might try searching on gearslutz.

Not sure if you want to run a condensor mic or not.

Likely you'll want a microphone with a stereo cardioid input. Source recording wouldn't be fun if it was mono.

I would honestly suggest getting a specific device just for this purpose, either with a microphone on it or one where you can plug in.

The zoom h2 is pretty cool, feature rich and is inexpensive. I have one and like it. If you get one I suggest getting an external card reader as the data read from the device into the computer is slow.

Some people I know have this, but do not know what they think about it

uhm... also you could try getting some binaural ear peices to record binaural audio.
I picked up these and they are quite fun to play with:

Need to get an microphone power cable for them so they can plug directly into my audio interface.

Anyways good luck!

Sorry for the slow response, had some computer issues. Thanks for the info. I have an iRiver I have been using for recording so using a sep. mic works best although those recorders look pretty nice. Is the sound quality of the zoom pretty good? looks like i can get one of those for under 150? To be honest I am not sure the dif. between the condenser mics and the binaural etc.... I think just a good quality mic that will record well and cut noise so that I can say sample everything from a wet hands clapping to voices etc... A good all around mic for that type of stuff.

shit i dunno... you can't really get anything "quality" for under 150. :) Good enough is another story. If you can get in a store and try them out with your laptop or something to test the quality. that would probably be your best bet. or ask a friend.
