so i've been looking to get a new piece of gear lately and i've been eyeing the machine drum for quite awhile...
my only issue before taking the plunge is the two different models the SPS-1UW or the SPS-1 (one allows for samples to be loaded into the MD and the other does not).
I'd like to save a few hundred if it really isn't worth the extra cost for the UW model.
So, I'm wondering if this extra sampling feature is indispensable? Is it really useful in practice? Or is it just a gimmicky "hey look it can sample too!" kind of feature?
YES!! The sampling feature is absolutely necessary. Aside from being able to load your own samples onto it, you can also set up the MD to sample itself with the input and playback machines, allowing for some truly insane results.
That drum machine is my weapon of choice for just about everything, and that's largely due to the sampling feature. I am a bigger fan of having it sample itself than loading samples onto it, though I do that from time to time as well.
It's worth it. Really. It pretty much turns the MD from an ordinary drum machine into a synth from outer space.

it should be noted that it can sample itself because it has the ability to do live sampling, meaning you can also do live sampling of its audio inputs (sampling itself just routes the output into the input internally).. you can get really great synth hooks by running an analog synth into the audio in and then using the MD to chop it up and mangle it.
seriously, get the sampling one.

If you can swing it get the UW version as advised... in the long run it will make the synth more versatile (and when it samples itself it's complete bonkers madness if you want to go there....)

yeah and they're deep enough that you'll be learning new tricks for awhile. I just sampled my oberheim DX into it and made a DX kit with all the sounds. And a few loops of beats on that thing into the MD just for good measure. With the sampler there really are no limits to what you can do with it...
