Having trouble syncing two macs. any ideas?

hey everyone. Ive been trying to sync up my macbook with my room-mates macbook pro using ableton. It seems we have done everything right. Each comp is hooked up to an audio interface (we both have a m-audio fast track pro). We have a midi going from the output of the Master to the input of the slave. It seems to work, and the master decides the tempo of the other and all that good stuff, but it seems to be a hair off. We tested just having the two metronome clicks going and fucking around with the latency on both, but we just cant seem to get them perfect.
Ive heard that maybe using ethernet or using one audio interface for the both of us might solve the problem.
Any suggestions?
What OS are you running on those machines?
We use two audio interfaces and still get things in sync... if I had to guess, you just need to play with the latency more and try to get REALLY precise. Also, I would refrain from adjusting the latency on BOTH machines simultaneously - adjusting the latency on just one while leaving the other alone will be much easier.

I've had no trouble doing it with my desktop and Kenneth's laptop. You need two soundcards (or at least two midi interfaces) and you simply sync one to the other. If there's a latency issue adjust one of them to match the other (usually adjust the slave to match the master) just like Christina said.

what midi interface are you using?
I cannot emphasize enough the importance of having a separate MIDI interface JUST for sync.
christina and i have wasted many hours trying to get our shit to stay in sync when using midi ports that are bundled with audio interfaces, or other midi controllers even. now she uses an elektron turbo-midi and i use an edirol um-2, and that setup has worked very well and keeps a great sync.
also make sure you try different usb cables and MIDI cables. we have also run into issues w/ bad cables that cause fuckups with sync. once it was a MIDI cable that a cat had decided to eat up, so we were able to actually see that it was defective, and in another case I had a bad USB cable that looked perfectly fine and was able to connect the midi device to my computer so it appeared to be working in software, however it was still defective and caused hiccups in the sync. replacing it with another usb cable fixed everything.
this kind of shit can drive you up the wall. when troubleshooting always start with the cables and trace backwards......
