What genres are welcome here?

So I know it says "techno" and all, but are other forms of electronica welcome? I'm a VJ and I work with a house/techno DJ, but I also play downtempo myself... I know it's not the hardcore stuff you guys are into, but hey, the more the merrier, right?

as far as i'm concerned, everyone is welcome here.

it's san francisco, after all.

but if you like trance, at least know that we'll be secretly snickering at you. ;)

jeez, just kidding.

Luuuuuuuuurve downtempo. Yum.

first downtempo is great. theres a time and a place for everything. 2am peakhour dancefloor= not the right time. 8am after being up all night in a puddle of some sort no doubt=perfect timing. i basically like antyhing that is 4/4....and i will always get down to some boop-bap type shit late night chillin

now to be overly verbose just cuz i feel like being a dick and im stoned and love to entertain myself...

check it:

if you find yourself questioning what is acceptable and held in high regard by the intelligent pursuers of cutting edge, quality electronic dance music and production in the bay area specifically, i abhor you: do not include the following adjectives and genres when categorizing and describing the aforementioned music at the heart of said debate:

in no real order, well sort of... the first 3 are the worst:

1. Progressive
2. Uplifting
3. Circuit
3. Industrial/Abrasive/Metal/Deathcore
4. Polka
5. Psy
6. Avant Garde
7. Noize
8. Florida Breaks
8. Happy Hardcore /Gabber
9. New Age
10. Trance
11. Experimental

oh snaap. i just vomited all over my keyboard after writing down those words so vile.

sorry to be so harsh, im sure that including #4(polka) comes as a complete and utter shock to most of you. sorry what can i say,i did the polka trance thing years ago when i lived in detroit. i did. seriously.

wtf is Polka Trance?

examples IMO.

oh man i have some pretty dark skeletons in my closet, but that was so many years ago... (remembering a decade ago hanging out with israeli psy trance people... all those men in pink lyrcra leggings!)

I think trance is making a come back. Since I'm not going to Detroit this year I will head out to the Skillz party at the Cow Palace. Its going to be hot and tickets are only $75. What's best is that after I get to see Tiestocles, Armin Van Barfen and Ferry Corsten (No need to mock that name!) I will no longer need to ever see another dj again. Since theese guys are Number 1, 2 and 3 on the DJ Chart (yes there is only one!) they are bound to be mindblowingly bad (bad like good, not bad like shitty). So take that DEMF, I bet you don't even have Carl Cocks this year!

On a more serious note, the above mentioned genres can be more easily remembered if refered to by the acronym "PUCIPPAN FaHeNTE"

Hmmm...funny that you should mention progressive. One of those genres that really has a great name but has never lived up to it. Such an oxymoron.

Greg had this one correct. All electronic genres are up for discussion here. However, you should take the following into consideration:

1. This site was founded with minimal, Techno, and Tech-House being the main areas of focus.

2. Everyone should be open to as much GOOD music as possible.

3. There are better sites out there for some particular niche areas. For example, if you're into DnB, Dubstep, or Breaks, I recomend groundscore.net over this site for sure. If you're into the more PROGRESSIVE varieties (that's right Farzana! :) ) you should probably head over to BayRaves.

That said, this is a site for the electronic music community, and it's limitations are defined only by those who use it. Make of it what you will..

Yoda?

ya i am pretty much all over the place as far as every scene goes. i take the good from the scene and make it a part of me. it's also interesting to see how different every scene is in different countries.

i was mentioning that i was able to see way more good hip hop with stars like murs in smaller crowds up close when i lived in europe than when i moved to l.a., where it's everywhere.

i like irreverent djs who mash things up. it's nice to see things like breakcore & mash-up just mixing up styles without any sense of irony and producing really interesting sounds--reggaeton is actually kickass music, some great beats...

but yes, i can't be all lovey dovey there are musical styles that make me cringe.

Well that's awesome, thanks for the reassurance. :-)

And as long as the melodic-jazzy-nu-soul-breaks are under a 145 bpm, you'll be alright mate :P

Just my humanity, getting the better of me.
