Thoughts on Burning Man?
Submitted By: Javaight
I've never been, and from what I've been exposed to, I've never been interested in the types of music at BM parties. So I had some random thoughts that I thought might be worth discussing...
1. Does techno exist at Burning Man?
2. Should "we" bring it there?
3. Do you think the SF techno scene would be bigger if techno had a significant presence at BM?

Glad somebody asked this. I was wondering if there were any fellow burners on this messageboard...
1. Techno is in full force at BM. Although you will hear every genre of electronic music at burning man (seems like Electro was all the rage last year) you can expect to see some serious talent in Black Rock City. At Burning Man I hear all kinds of new music as well. Last year I constantly found myself saying "What the hell was that sound? Incredible!"
Burning Man is really just a big party, and you will definitely be please by all the different kinds of hybrid music you hear. In addition to your plethora of DJs, you will get some eclectic music groups. Think "Flame-throwing tubas and bass guitars meets drum machine riding around on a giant metal elephant float."
2. Check out BM website. burningman.com
It's a pretty rough situation. You have to be really prepared. It helps if you have other friends to camp with, especially ones who know what they are doing.
3. SF brings the Techno to burning man, although BM does seem starved for some good minimal stuff. There is really to much to see and hear, so I wouldn't be surprised If I just missed it.
BM is quite an experience. I can't really explain it. You just have to see it for yourself. :)

Wolf + Lamb did a camp there last year and as far as I know it was pretty mental, but i cant speak for the rest of BM since ive never been.

Heroic Robot will be at the Shadyvil camp kicking it for at least one or two techno parties. There will be fun, games and lasers. Just look for the colour-strobing dome.
I <3 lasers.

One of the best clubs I have ever been to was a temporary, 90-ft geodesic dome out in the middle of the desert. Root Society was were it was at at BM '07.
Haha, but look how filthy the decks get. I'm still contemplating whether or not to bring my gear for our own camp. It's just too damn fun not to. Unfortunately, BM playa dust is so fine and very alkaline = electronic equipment destroying.

I'm going for sure. It's too bad there's so much fun stuff in the city that I'll miss that week. Small price to pay for the biggest party on Earth. :P

We do but it's supposed to be a secret for a little while longer.
Yeah I'm over it too. Here's some ways to enjoy Burning Man at home:
(these are probably funnier if you have been before)
* Before eating any food, drop it in a sandbox and lick a battery.
* Stack all your fans in one corner of the living room. Put on your most fabulous outfit. Turn the fans on full blast. Dump a vacuum cleaner bag in front of them.
* Buy a new set of expensive camping gear. Break it.
* Get so drunk you can't recognize your own house. Walk slowly around the block for five hours.
* Have a 3 a.m. soul-baring conversation with a drag nun in platforms, a crocodile and Bugs Bunny. Be unable to tell if you're hallucinating. Lust after Bugs Bunny.
* Cut, burn, electrocute, bruise, and sunburn various parts of your body. Forget how you did it. Don't go to a doctor.
* Pay an escort of your affectional preference subset to not bathe for five days, cover themselves in glitter, dust, and sunscreen, wear a skanky neon wig, dance close naked, then say they have a lover back home at the end of the night.
.....But seriously who doesn't want to go party in the dusty desert for 8 days with lots of loud music, weirdos, and lots of (some) hot naked people?

You should also:
- Pay a bum to sit in the corner of your living room and stare at you for three days.
- Pour a mixture of lye and table salt into your laptop. Shake it well while you play the nozzle of a hairdryer over the keyboard.
- Get a bunch of frat boys to repeatedly ask you if you have anything to trade.
if i went to burningman i would expect to dance for hours upon hours around a guy holding a flame. just one guy in a robe, holding the Flame of Omnipotence Power! and oh how i would dance....

Some of us are taking real, actual beds to Burning Man.
Oh yes. :-)
Did I mention the gas-powered hot shower system? All mod cons this year.
Whaa? People sleep at Burning Man? Who needs a bed??

If I had another five solar panels I'd be taking an a/c unit too.
Yeah we are going to have 2 showers this year, and hopefully 2 porta-potties for ourselves again, huaazh.
AC sounds great. I think if i'm still going to this when i'm old i'll be doin the RV thang...

man, I DEFINE myself by Burning Man. I am a BURNER!
I got evidence to underscore my burning excellence.
SMELL my dirty fur knickers that I just peeled off after five consecutive burned out days. Well except for that one time on day three that I felt compelled to let my balls swing while I had the attention of a small crowd.

I intend to go at least once just to experience it. I'm not entirely sure that I will love it, as I too would far rather be staying in a hotel. But it seems way too insane to just completely write off and never at least try.
I'll try anything once! (except crack)

it's worth going.
i've been thrice, but have skipped the last 5 or 6 years.
it's just a fairly major investment of time, energy, money, heart, and brain cells. never underestimate the harshness of a desert environment either.
there are moments though, when it cools down at night and you're looking across the playa at this sea of creativity, debauchery and weirdness when you just get goosebumps and realize why people go to the lengths they do.
recommended, at least once.
there's no other place on earth quite like black rock city.
maybe we should get a group together for next year and throw a lil sf techno camp? i think i'm about due for a return visit.
