New mainstream electronica classics?
Submitted By: Razvan
So i haven't really bought or listened to any "mainstream" electronica since the mid to late nineties, ie fatboy slim, chemical brothers, daft punk, and that sort of shit. What's new that's good nowadays?

i'll tell you what's downright awful... the newest Underworld album. good god i had to scrub myself with lava soap and steel wool after hearing that tub of runny shit.

They actually just released a downtempo/chill album which I haven't gotten around to purchasing. What I heard sounded promising. I agree, Crocodile sucked ass.
I'm with you Razvan, haven't been keeping up with the poptronic. It seems like it tapered off though. Lost it's steam after the nineties and all the big labels lost interest. K7 is still rocking it; representing the underground to boot. On that note, perhaps the populous went with more of a downtempo vibe. I mean, look at Thievery Corp, Tosca, Bonobo, BOC, etc...
Any thoughts?

Interesting new release from Ghostly too on Adult Swim website...
(its free you can download it)
Interesting because of the demographic involved with Adult Swim, Ghostly is looking to get a younger crowd involved it seems. A lot of down tempo shtuff.
Pretty smart, I'd say. Purchasing power of disposable income GO!

don't forget about dance-punk, electro-pop, & new rave.
i wouldn't categorize (much of) it as mainstream (with the exception of, like, the postal service and hot chip)... but it's huge in the indi scene, and therefore it trickles into the mainstream here and there.
lcd soundsystem, !!! (a.k.a. chk chk chk), the rapture, le tigre, new young pony club, and hot chip are good introductions to this genre.
yeah, but too much of that stuff is way too cheesy for me tim...

are you kidding me?
maybe if you're talking about the postal service or hot chip.....
but, come on! to say that lcd soundsystem is cheesy -- and yet, you referenced fat boy slim...
ummm.... :?:
Oh Snap!
i was mainly refering to hot chip, le tigre, and dance punk ;)
point well taken on fatboy slim, i was watching some satelite channel over the weekend and they were showing a live tapeing of a faboy slim "concert" in the uk. With only one track playing, he was up there hands in the air, hooting an hollerin, pretending to be working the mixer (you know, nob nipping) while the cheese ass build up continues.

Dunno how "mainstream" it is, but on that whole downtempo tip, I would say "Ma Fleur" by The Cinematic Orchestra of a modern day electronica classic. Hell, a masterpiece even.
On a more dance-y tip, the new self-titled Kleerup album- like Moroder or Vangelis retrofitted for current dancefloors........really nice stuff.

Ma Fleur is great. I really like their album "ëvery day" as well. Being from 2002, their sound on that one is more raw and unpolished, and you can see how they've progressed over these past few years.
Portishead just came out with a new album recently too. I've only listened to the whole thing once so far, but first impressions are dark and serious, with a more developed and thicker sound than their previous efforts.
Flying Lotus also has a new release out on Warp that's been getting a lot of hype...
Yow, how could I forget the Portishead record- to my ears, best thing theyve done. The FlyLo album is great- a little long, but good.

Yeah The newest Portishead album 'Third' is pretty good. I saw them live a few months ago at Coachella and they were really awesome. I guess that was one of the few live shows that they have ever done because apparently Beth Gibbons gets stage fright? Great music anyways. Very dark.

I've seen them live a couple of times- both times in the UK, in tiny venues near Bristol. Beth really doesn't like big audiences apparently, so doing international tours is really difficult (you need big audiences to recoup the cost of such a thing).
I liked Third but I have to say I liked their more acid-jazzey stuff more than the triphoppy stuff. S'all good and it is a brilliant album.
