Mutek 2009
So im really thinking of going to Mutek instead of DEMF this year. Does anyone have any experiences to share? ive never been to mutek, Montreal nor Canada. What should i expect?

I'm thinking about doing both, although it kicked my butt last time. (Driving the 10 hours there and back to Detroit didn't help matters, though.) I went in 2006. Montreal is pretty, safe, and the food is generally good. Mutek was fun and friendly. (And the 5 hour Hawtin/Villalobos set in the park was great, too!) My one complaint was the sound quality. I would've thought an established festival would have better sound, but I found the indoor sound a bit too loud and fuzzy, and the outdoor sound at the park was mediocre. I don't know if they've improved this or not, but I hope so.

Hmmmm.... I have always said that Picnik Electronique has some of the BEST outdoor sound I have ever heard. Clear, pristine, properly EQ'ed, not bass-heavy, not deafening, yet still very thumping. Perfecto, imo. Wish more sound was that great!

It is, the sound there is amazing. I was quite confused by this too. The sound at metropolis is always good too.

hmmm... maybe they've improved it! Nice. I will confess, I don't recall the sound at Metropolis - I was so exhausted that night I went home to bed after finding out the UR folks weren't playing. I was thinking of the other indoor space, the name of which I can't recall.
ok... i'm really considering going... but i know no French at all. Am I going to be cool up there!? haha... where is everybody staying>?

Yes. I've only been in a situation once in Montreal where a cab driver didn't speak English, and I'm fairly convinced he was faking it to run up the meter :-P
Learning a few phrases is the polite thing to do I suppose, but it's still Canada, and English is very common. It's not like France, where they HATE non French-speakers. In other words, they won't string you up and beat you with baguettes if you don't speak the language ;-)
