Sunday, October 4, 2009 11:36am How did it go for you? I was only able to hit the civic center after the parade and wow it was really packed. At one point i was in an area where everyone was walking every which way with absolutely no space. It was quite awful. But overall lots of happy people. Half naked women are good too. Never made it to see my friend Lauren Flax play with fischerspooner. I didnt have a schedule or a map where things were going on. Also ATTs txting service seemed to have been down so i couldnt find anyone.
We got to the Van Ness entrance later in the afternoon, but didn't bother going in. Didn't realize it was $10, and it was totally crowded with kids in lycra. Hadn't really wanted to do much more than wander around a bit and check out some music, so decided to skip it.

Sheesh. Are we literally raining on the parade in here or what?
Yes, it was crowded. Sure, there were a lot of inebriated teenagers trying their best to get discovered by the undercover American Apparel talent scouts peppered throughout the crowd. Indeed, $10 did seem a bit pricey for an 8 hour party featuring over 20 floats (many of which voluntarily take financial losses on the event). Even the telecom companies dropped the ball again, failing to install additional cell towers for tens of thousands of people to simultaneously use mobile phones in the space of less than one square mile, after the same thing happened last year!
Yet, against these insurmountable odds, I somehow managed to have a fantastic time and enjoyed the absurdity of the spectacle as much as ever. In what other city in the United States will you find over 100,000 people gathered for such a celebration of dance music? Where else can you dance on a float at sunset and be completely unable to see a single spot of the ground through the sea of bobbing heads? Where else could this all take place DIRECTLY IN FRONT OF CITY HALL, the very symbol of the city's governance?
In my opinion, 'twas the best day of the year, as it has been for each of the past years. Once again, I was reminded that San Francisco is an absolutely special and wonderful place, and its citizens are an absolutely special and wonderful group of people.

I had a blast. It was super crowded this year but still a ton of fun.
The last 2 years its been a $10 requested donation (maybe longer, i wasnt here before that), so unless you were a cheapskate (or really really broke) its been $10 for a while now.
Yea theres tons of silly dressed kids running around, but its an all ages event, so thats bound to happen. These kids need to have some access to good music, as a few of them will grow up to be the next bunch of jaded raver techno heads like us :)

$10 is nothing for 8+ hours of music, sheesh.
Puking 13 year old girls and 13 year old girls trying to sell me stuff FTMFL.
But everything else was relatively pleasant except the massive amounts of people...
still, an all together cheerful day!!
Lack of Kontrol/Auralism float a very big disappointment though and a LOT of people I know stayed away since that wasn't there.
Kontrol was fun that night though.
Loved having that representation in past years and its a massive massive promotional opportunity missed I feel...
That said, its super expensive and a LOT of work so I understand why it wasn't there this year.
Listed pulled off the most lively float at the festival and had the best music there too, so congratulations to them!
The Dancers and DJ's were obviously having an absolute ball on that float! You could feel it compared to the others...

I don't think it's a bad thing that it was $10, but my friends and I just really weren't up for the event in general (had just planned to stay for a short time and wander around), so the $10 charge kind of helped dissuade us, along with the size of the crowd. And I'm not against young folks out dancing -- hell, if it helps keep electronic dance music alive, that's great -- I just don't know that it's a crowd I felt like partying with on Saturday.

Its great to have a festival in SF to show what we got going on out here. But, in my honest opinion I feel like there are way too many wasted kids and idiots in full force over the weekend that it really casts a negative shadow on the electronic music scene in America and envelopes every stereotype of drugged out ravers. Im not saying I dont think Love??? (whatever its called) isnt a great thing for SF, I just wish it wasnt such a shit show of amatuers and delinquents. My 2cents.

i dunno why people dont like a fucked up audience. If i recall 100% of techno events ive been to have a fucked up audience. Obviously this event had thousands of them compared to like 200 at most events. Even with all the fucked up kids there was still a happy vibe. I saw thuggy teenagers being polite about bumping into people. If this was some other event i could see it turning ugly.
Yeah, well I think I had a grudge with lovefuck cause there was no kontrol stage, they wanted stages with more unique and creative concepts like solid gold hot tub. ;/
Also, due the terms of my plea bargain, I am not to be near within 200 feet of fucked up teenagers. It sucks but you have to learn lessons the hard way sometimes. My girlfriend and I just didn't realise that they could see us from their vantage point. Live and learn.
i had a phenomenal time and for me the experience was the best love paradefestevolution to date. i spent 95% of the day at the listed float and the music and vibe there was just perfect all day. danny howells set, even when put next to lee burridge and craig richards, was an absolute monster. naveen g was the surprise of the weekend. never heard him play before and he caught my attention twice that weekend. yea there were a lot of kids there getting crunk, but what did you honestly expect? lovevolution is a good time to anyone who isn't jaded, over critical or just looking for the negative in everything, and outside of this forum there are tons of people like that. even though it was rammed--i estimate anywhere from 140-150k people there--you could easily enjoy yourself and the music in the comfort of your own personal space if you didn't have to be front and center in the crowd. even when i did surf into the crowd front and center, i only encountered positive people. the space behind the listed float was quite casual and loungy with enough space for you to run across without hitting anyone. i didn't see much of the over-intoxication or disrespect that i heard about from a lot of people, but then again i wasn't anywhere near the trance and drum and bass 'youngster' floats. i mean it's not that hard to avoid 99% of the types of people you don't want to encounter there imo.
