Lee Burridge moving to SF?!

" I love San Francisco. It's got so much going on right now. The underground scene is awesome. The local DJ's are fantastic and I feel it really does have the potential to become the Berlin of America. Everyone is looking to Berlin still but it feels to me there needs to be something new. I think with a little work and encouragement that it could also become an electronic music Mecca as Berlin has. I'm staying here right now (until the end of November) but am working on coming back here full time. This is such a creative city. Obviously there are good producers and DJ's here right already but I want to help encourage more and more of them to move here and build on an already rock solid foundation. There needs to be a load more music coming out of the city and inspiring others to want to be a part of it. I guess in answer to the actual question I love the creativity and the way people think about things here. There's a really great vibe here in a lot of different forms. "

F*** yes. Totally agreed. We're on the cusp of something BIG. Not just in the techno world, SF is on the map with Dubstep as well. And we've always been a big house town. It's time. Start up those studio engines. Let's get to crankin em out y'all !

i agree--there's some incredible dubstep going on here.

i think the only thing keeping a lot of musicians from gravitating here is just that it's so damn far away from everything. it's just so difficult to travel to other parts of the world from here (in terms of time + expense)... hard to keep going as a musician, since a lot of them make money off of touring.

I've met a lot of people that would really like to live here. At the same time, the distance is healthy I think. people really appreciate their events here!

Nope, it has nothing to do with the extremely high cost of living here...
nothing at all.....

Part of the reason people (and musicians/artists in particular) love Berlin is because its super cheap to live there. Too bad we will never be able to say the same thing about this place!!

ya... and as much as artists gravitate here, this place just doesn't have a culture that supports the arts. there are museums and film festivals--which are all quite expensive, but overall... the structure just isn't there. this is really a place to make money.

this was probably a great place to live forty years ago for artists, but i don't think, not anymore due to the cost of living. (maybe certain parts of the east bay--certainly not anywhere in SF)

i mean, there's a great underground that is very supportive because of this issue that loves the music, but partly because it's so damn hard to do it here. and aside from that, that they're enforcing the cabaret laws in Oakland of all places (!) and making it so difficult for anyone without tons of money to have a liquor license and enforcing laws--weird because taking away the curfew at 2am would create a lot of revenue.

i love the undergorund scene it's awesome, but i just wouldn't describe nightlife in san frnacisco as amazing--well actually the underground scene is amazing--but venture outside of certain parties and it gets bad really quickly. it's just such a hassle--the cool people make it worth it though.

after some of these thoughts, what would make it better? I certainly wouldn't want to kill the spirit--there is such good spirit here--but some relaxing of the rules, some allowances for an afterhours scene... a culture that doesn't dance is an unhealthy culture... :D

ya but the thing about Berlin is that you don't earn anything, even from working a full time job, so it's not really that cheap. i guess it's just that poor people can live there with some sort of decency without being in creepy and dangerous neighborhoods.

Well, if there is anything good about this whole economic crisis, maybe the California real estate market will finally correct itself. I never planned on being able to buy property in S.F., but I still think that it would be nice.

the outlook is good for people looking to buy property, but not for people trying to rent or make a living in sf unfortunately...

Quote:
-- Home prices will fall roughly 25 percent from their peak.

-- Taxable sales will drop by 10 percent across the region.

-- Payrolls will shrink by 2.5 percent over the next two years.

-- Rental rates are likely to continue to rise, particularly in San Francisco, where 60 percent of households are renters.

i think it would help the scene a lot to lobby the state/local gov to allow for a 4am last call like new york, chicago, miami, etc. think of all the extra revenue promoters and clubs could pull in from the bar staying open later for the tourists. it'd make it easier for everyone to make a comfortable living in the scene. now is a good time to lobby the city/county for such tax revenue boosting measures...

Quote:
The mayor also discussed rearranging tourism spending to focus less on overseas advertising and more on encouraging Bay Area residents to spend their money on weekend trips to San Francisco - not unlike the shift that the city saw after 9/11.

Newsom has been meeting with local executives for several weeks to discuss the economy and how Bay Area companies expect to weather the current climate. So far revenue from almost all industries, including vulnerable retail and tourism business, is up from last year - but not as much as everyone had hoped.

Sales tax revenue for the city is almost flat, year over year, according to city analysts. Property transfer taxes, which are paid when a property changes ownership, are way down - in 2007, total properties sold amounted to $6.7 billion, compared to just $1 billion for the first eight months of this year, said Newsom.

"So far, clearly there are signs of a slowdown but not a local crisis," said Jim Lazarus, senior vice president of policy with the San Francisco Chamber of Commerce. "A lot of businesses had a very good summer. But there is worry that if consumer confidence drops and spending drops, the next three or four months are going to be tough."

what do you guys think? i think the political climate is ripe for this to become a reality...

Right and the rent is going up for several reasons, but we should also point out that people are getting kicked out of their homes also. Landlords are either selling or losing their property and a lot of renters are evicted because of this. More people looking for housing = higher demand.

Also, a lot more people are probably renting because buying a house doesn't seem as palatable these days...

I'm not sure when the rent will stop climbing in S.F. It seems never ending. I remember six years ago when you could get a 4-bedroom house with a backyard by the beach in the sunset dist. for $1900. Those days are looong gone. I wouldn't live in the sunset anymore anyways, but I feel like over the last few years my rent has steadily increased.

Anyways, if you are renting, shop around and take your time. There are still deals to be had...

I agree with Lee on this one. SF has a shitload to offer. The music scene is pretty damn good. Right on par with Chicago and New York. I lived in Chicago for about 7 years as well as Austin for about 5. I had no problems rubbing elbows with working producers. European producer continually toured chicago, so the night life was great. Yeah there were a handful of bars that had a 4am liquour license but most didn't. The underground scene was gigantic. Warehouses were cheap. I was paying 1100 for a 4000 square foot loft. Since most of chicago's youth grew up with house music on the radio, there was no shortage of an audience.

Now Austin was rough. Lots of artists and musicians live there. Cheap housing, cheap living and lots of space. But electronic music is an outside force. Very hard to fill bar. People are just not into it. Its an indie rock type of city and there's a shitload of hipsters. its great for them.

Ive been here for close to 4 years now, and I have seen a hell of alot of music. :) There is no shortage here. And for the shows that are important to me, it has always been packed. I talk to alot of people around the country and they are pretty jealous about music coming thru here. Feel blessed.

Now if we can somehow make women like techno. The male/female ratio is pretty bad ;)

we all <3 SF!

depends on what party you're at. Kontrol parties have always seemed to have plenty of women. But there were definitely a lot more men than women at the Adam Beyer/Joel Mull show.

How can you be so sure? Monika, are you going around feeling peoples packages again?

thats how i figured it out, problem?

also, Beyer is "hard-er" techno. just saying, I think that can be more dude-ish sometimes?

stereotypes, I know.
I'll give myself an eye

o wow, i don't really notice a sausage fest at techno parties here. there are plenty of women at techno clubs.

i guess i'm just spoiled, my standard sare high! i find nightlife a real pain in the ass here. it's nice, but it's not kickass. expensive public transportation that's nonexistant at night, lots of taxi taking, this 2am thing. dancing for several hours at a time is so nice. that's why i love the kontrol parties, they last forever.

does SF have to follow state law?

check this out--this is unbelievable! in a place as economically blighted and crime ridden as oakland, don't the police have anything better to do? I love oakland though.

Just figured. It's the only way to get an accurate male/female ratio count at the Endup - so, you know....

i think you are spoiled ;) Try living ina place like hayward and trying to party like we do in SF. When i first moved here, i tried to do the taxi/bus thing, and yeah that sucks. standing around 6th and market at 2am looking for a taxi is not that fun. Now i drive to all the events going on which is quite nice, but it does stop me from having too many drinks. But thats also a good thing. I do see alot of girls at techno parties, but sometimes its hit or miss. I guess i was just speaking from a single guy perspective. All the girls are with with guys at these techno parties. If you go to mainstream type bars, you see packs of single girls which are pretty hard to find at techno clubs.

actually, I did live in Hayward for a while. Still have a place there for when I'm dealing with mum's medical probs.

but back to the point, I meet plenty of single girls at sf techno parties. I mean sure, there may not be as many as at a hip hop party, but the skank factor is way lower, too. There are a couple regular groups of single girls who come out to my own faktion party (BSP: Tonight at Anu!) and also various girls to a lot of the other parties I go to. Plus, techno girls are way hotter than average. :dj:

tell me about it. however, it's cheap as hell to live, so it's great if you're into making music but not so great if you're also into spinning it, of which i do both.

i've thought about making the move out west, however, it's just so fucking ridiculously expensive i'd rather move outside of the US for that kind of money.

well if you do white collar work you are guaranteed to make an extra 10-20k which covers the housing cost. in 3 years i more than doubled my salary from when i was living in austin. I do flash design/dev work.

That's very true, but it's a leap of faith based on an outsider's dim perspective. However, I'm sure good has come of such decisions. :)

i don't think i've ever met anyone from out of state who's regretted moving here, including myself via austin. i don't think i'll ever relocate anywhere else within this hemisphere either...

Yeah, I grew up here, but I can't see myself living anywhere else in the US for an extended period of time.

India, Fiji, Cambodia, Africa (haven't been there yet!) would be a completely different story!
