Electronic music labels/descriptors

Okay, I'll admit, there are some things that I don't know when it comes to describing the sound of certain track. I'm organizing my digital shit and trying to be as accurate as possible in describing what tracks sound like, ie, techy, jazzy, bleepy, synthy, etc. However there is some shit I can't describe or don't know how to describe.

What I have so far...

1. Synthy

2. Melodic,

3. Deep,

4. Techy

5. Dubby

6. Bleepy

7. Glitchy

8. Bassy

i'm sure i forgot some stuff but what else is there?

btw, what is "Tracky"?

Ahhh the challenge of organizing digital music. This has always been a pain-in-the-ass for me. Especially when it comes to categorizing music. I can add a few (some of these are a joke).

1. Proggy
2. Pumping
3. Chuggy
4. Farty
5. Funky
6. Jacked-up
7. Bangin'
8. Acid
9. Groovin'
10. Dubby

and the list could go on...

When I used to tag songs in my collection like this I would come up with track descriptions like:

"Driving-Banging-Funky-Minimal-Electro-Tech House"

This got kind of annoying. I suppose I still tag tracks like this, but recently I just tried to split my music up into broad sub-genres like: "Electro, Minimal, Techno, House, etc. This has been working well. I burn my CD's by genre and date. I like it simple.

I use ITunes to organize my music. Yes, Itunes... If you have an iPod, then you have to use iTunes, and I like all my music in one place. By the way, If any of you use iTunes and use CDs for DJ sets, I wrote a little script that spits out nice CD labels. Before this, I would spend hours hand-making labels in Illustrator which was tedious. So, if you are interested I can send it your way, or even put it up on my server. If you used it on your local machine you would need to have PHP and a webserver installed.

Here's a screenshot.

Yeah, that's preety much what I do. Since I use Serato, I have my main crate with all of my tracks, and so in order to more easily choose tracks that would fit together, from thousands of others...

omg, i can't belive I don't know what makes a track "jackin"... or tracky... need some help on those... i probably will know it when i hear it, but don't have a name for it..

ok, let me say once again and right off the bat...

I'M NOT A DJ.

but... my interpretation of "tracky" has always meant that the tracks are kinda tough and loopy. not really melodic and transitioning. alot of what i'd consider to be "tracky" might also fall under the heading of "dj tools". a dj who plays on 3 decks and works the mixer alot is more likely to play "tracky" records.

simply put, a "tracky" cut would be stripped down, bangin', and more repetitive than one you might consider a "song". if you think of it as a "song" or it might get played on the radio, odds are it ain't tracky.

e.g. basement jaxx's "fly life" = tracky, trentmoeller's "moan" = not tracky

anyone care to agree/disagree/refine this definition?

ah, ok. fly life, that brings me back :) thats kinda tad on the melodic side, tho very repetative.

been trying to work on the good ol 3 deck action, two on serato and one on vinyl...

tracky to me just means loopy.

Audion = very tracky
Plastikman = definition of tracky

but whos to say?

Clint Stewart (Auralism Records, Nightlight Music)

to me tracky is epitomized by old 90s chicago records out of dancemania and dj international records. mostly all made on the old roland x0x boxes these records used the gated hihats to full effect usually accompanied by a shuffled dry clap or snare on the 2 and 4 and repeating 808 rim shot or cowbell 16th notes. almost old school hiphop style like todd terry tracks but at the same time always thumping the 4 to the floor.

IMO the track that best represents tracknastiness would be 'work that mothafucka' by steve poindexter on muzique records.

Mark Farina is to "jackin"
as Plastikman is to "tracky"

liked mark farina back in the day...

Yeah, somebody once told me tracky reffered to those old chicago records. Not a fan of the overworked hi hats, usually, tho i dig "work that mofo".

I assume ya'll are refering to the older Plastikman tracks, like Helikopter and Spastik, wich is what I thought tracky meant as well.

gimme some mark farina tracks to check out, i gotta do a housier set early on Saturday.
