Dubfire #1 Techno producer of 2008? If not Dubfire then who?

Date:

Everything Dubfire puts out hits top 5 on Beatport. Not to mention the popularity of his remix of Radio Slave's GrindHouse. Who do you think is been the #1 producer of 2008?

definitely not dubfire. his stuff is so obvious. i think dOp made some of the best music in 08, johnny d requires mention, and of course everything mikael stavostrand touches is GOLD!

by that logic you must agree that britney spears is the best singer because her albums and singles hit the top 5 every time and usually are #1 for a while.

personally, I typically despise the beatport top 10. the good shit is usually in the top 100, but definitely not the top 10-15. occasionally something good will grace the top 10 that is decent.

agree with danny here. i havent bought anything in the top 10 on beatport in ages. i think a samim track or three that i've played have made it there. i think a problem with many dj's is that they insta-buy that shit in the top 10. and it is, imo, mostly shit.

i agree with both of you about the top 10, but at this point its the only indicator we have on what is being most downloaded by djs. dubfire is definitely too obvious for many of us djs that play out cause we like to play shit that others have not heard before.

but you cant compare brittany spears to dubfire, spears is more like tiesto. dubfire is more like rage against the machine ;)

I believe what Alland was trying to say was that his productions and layout are too obvious. Beat - Breakdown - Swell - Beat. Simple music is very easy to listen to. That's why so many people like it and hence the trite and boring options in the beatport top 10.

The track "Minimario Jump" just hit the Techno #1 spot.
https://www.beatport.com/en-US/html/content/release/detail/156792/firema...

What that says, is that the majority of electronic music fans/djs are still in their adolescent "rave" days. Hopefully, we will mature soon.

I'm not trying to discredit Dubfire. His production value is incredible even though his layout is predictable. I'm discrediting the populous who purchases music. When you base your opinions around the general populous, you are homogenizing your options...hmm, reminds me of the DJ Dreamteam thread...

As for "Top Producer," I have difficulty in naming "the best." I believe comparisons are detrimental to art. I have really enjoyed Andomat3000 and Nick Curly for their production value and general funkiness that they bring to a dancefloor. For artists, Marek Hemmann and KiloWatts have been blowing my mind.

Thats exactly what i meant. and i dunno... i think the thing he's doing now was something i would have been WAY into maybe 2-3 years ago. now his shit sounds tired. i think it's ideal for the masses who catch on late to what is going on in the forward thinking world of dance music. the duggudugga stacatto beep techno trend is just as tired as anything... but that's what the prog/house kids want from techno now that magazines and messageboards tell them it's ok to like techno, and they're still a major force in clubbing, so they get it... over and over.

i havent heard anything in those top 10 beatport tracks that's been good in a long long time. and i have a hard time believing that any dj who is playing that shit is worth their salt at all. at least as an underground talent. if you're trying to be pop, go you. good job.

favored 2008 artists:

-CLARO INTELECTO
- Ra.H (check his last release on morphine doser)
- Mathias Kaden.
huge respect to dubfire, but not the best... there s plenty of talented people out there...

strongly recommended to avoid beatport top 10...

I agree with you about the lay outs, I guess I look at it in a different way since im not really a producer. I saw a lot electro, house and progressive house djs (like Pete Tong for example) that would rarely play underground techno all dropping dubfire's tracks. All im saying is more DJs purchased and played techno tracks in the last 2 years and dubfire was a major contributor. his work has been really influential to the techno movement in the last 3 years.

making electro house and progressive house dj's aware of "techno" and watering down something many hold sacred and care a lot about doesnt equal contribution. there are artists that many people who buy said tunes have never heard of who have contributed more to techno than this dude who decided one day he's not going to make super commercial house in favor of sticking with the times. with all due respect to yoshitoshi and all that, quitting deep dish and rebranding yourself over night isn't contributing nothin to nothin.

i'm not hating on the guy, i'm just saying... he hasn't done shit for techno save for getting it on a bunch of cheesy shiny shirt clubbers ipods who will just as soon ditch techno as they did the last genre the magazines told them wasn't cool anymore.

the music he puts has produced these last few years is knee deep and shows about as much techno influence as my music has progressive influence. sure there's a tiny bit of it in there, but it relies on cliche and obvious, ubiquitous sounds and structures. it's instant gratification; it's the new progressive.

sorry but #1 techno producer? no. #1 commercially viable dance music producer that has just enough techno to exploit the word? yes.

but i'm just one man with one opinion.
a jaded opinion? sure. but hey... welcome to techno. ;-)

hear hear! ya grumpy bastard!

Straight up producer, Loco Dice...that album's still on my rotation. And Josh Wink is almost tied, for his tasteful production, but also for taking my money hand over fist with every Ovum release.

As for Dubfire....he seemed to have jumped the underground shark sometime in the summer but c'mon, everyone was dropping Grindhouse only a few short months ago....:-D

The Beatport Top 10 is full of crap, because it's just a lowest common denominator game now. Any track with a heavy bassline, white noise and an uncleared Daft Punk sample will find its way to the top because that's what works for 90% of the dance floors out there. If you don't like it, it feels good to turn your nose up and not buy it....but the good news is that on Beatport it's really easy to dig for the gold!

buy the ticket, take the ride

http://www.house-heads.com

Martin Buttrich is the executive producer on almost every Loco Dice record (I believe). You talk about Loco, you can't leave out Buttrich:

"It depends. Sometimes, for example, with Dice I'm having a bad day and I don't have any ideas, so then he tries to put me in a better mood by playing some melodies or whatever. Sometimes he's kind of laying down on the sofa, really exhausted, and I'm the one who's trying to put together ideas. I mean it's always a balance really."

yeah it's amazing how many big names have ghost producers. i could never imagine doing that. but i guess it's normal in every other genre.

but for the sake of being constructive here, i think shed, tobias., dettmann, klock and nodge were the ones who blew my mind the most in 2008. their dark, industrial take on basic channel aesthetics -- and house music in the case of shed and tobias. -- is something that was well needed in a world where the genre "minimal" meant anything but.

monoloc is a lesser known producer who was mostly "insta-buy" last year. i really like marco resman's stuff, and johnny d, andomat 3000, SIS, koze, and nick curly did it proper in 2008 for me.

+1 on Ben Klock. One other worthy mention is Robert Babicz. He doesn't necessarily produce techno in the strictest sense, but puts amazing touches of musicality and absurdly strong production skills on everything he creates. I don't listen to his stuff super often or hear it out in many techno sets, but every time I come back and give it a listen I'm impressed by the quality and consistency.

i once told kenneth that i thought mark broom was the justin timberlake of techno. he seemed to get a kick out of it but i was half serious.... he programs his sounds just right so that they work as sort-of a pop hook, but definitely not in a conventional way.

you bring the sexy back tim
